Where do your ideas for home designs come from?

Travels, magazines, and yes, the Internet. We’re design junkies, always on the lookout for something new, something innovative and fresh. Our love of design fuels our work. It also keeps us on our toes. We’re committed to the health and vitality of our brand; quality design is a big part of what Markel Homes represents to home buyers and realtors in Colorado.

What are Markel’s design priorities?

We’re fans of open, fluid floor plans and plentiful outdoor living areas. We treat windows as an element of design, featuring large glass in attractive and sometimes unusual configurations. We like inviting the natural world into our living spaces. People feel better in a lighter, sun-filled environment. Natural light has a softening, calming effect and adds an aesthetic quality to the home’s interior.

What do you mean by “easy living”?

Easy living is our brand of low-maintenance condo lofts, town homes and duplexes. Lawn care and snow removal services are provided by the community HOA. You enjoy come-and-go convenience without worrying about an empty home or untended property, even when you’re traveling for weeks or months at a time. The other piece of “low maintenance” are the durable, sustainable building materials that we use in all of our construction. An easy living residence is a well-built, quality home that requires very little maintenance, now and for years to come.

What sustainable building practices does Markel follow?

We’ve been building green since before green-building was a thing. We made energy efficiency and Energy Star® certification a priority years ago. The homes in our new communities in Lafayette and Longmont will feature certifications from LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), Energy Star®,  Indoor airPLUS and the Zero Energy Ready Home program from the US Department of Energy, all designed to improve the home’s indoor comfort, save money and lower the home’s maintenance requirements. The building materials we use are friendly to the environment; some are artificially made and replace natural materials to conserve resources. We wrap our homes in a water-resistant sheath and install high-efficiency furnaces and innovative, energy-saving Nest® thermostats. We encourage wise water use with automatic drip irrigation systems and low-water plants. Go here for more details.

I understand that Markel will design and build a custom home based on my preferences. How does the process work?

We start with a meeting to discuss your ideas, tastes, preferences and budget. We also talk about the lots available in the Markel community you want to live in. Our team takes your input and designs a custom home within your budget that reflects your taste in architecture and interior design and layout. We provide architectural drawings and estimated costs, with no obligation or fee on your part. To move forward, the drawings are tweaked to your satisfaction, a contract is signed and the work begins. Go here for more details.

What Markel community features the broadest mix of home types?

We’re proponents of inclusive communities, where buyers can select from multiple home types and price points. The mix attracts people at various ages and stages in life to create a multi-generational experience for singles, couples, families and empty nesters. North End in Louisville features a broad mix of product, with single-story and two-story single-family homes, town homes, duplexes and condo lofts. Three new communities coming in 2018—Blue Sage and Silver Creek in Lafayette, and West Grange in Longmont—will all feature a variety of home products and price points.

Does Markel have any plans to build in Lafayette, CO?

Yes! Two new Markel Homes communities are going up in Lafayette. Silver Creek is conveniently located in the heart of Lafayette just east of Hwy 287. Blue Sage is located one block north of South Boulder Road in west Lafayette, directly east of North End. Both communities will feature single-family homes as well as stylish duplexes and town homes.

What architecture will be featured in the Lafayette communities?

New architectural designs will have their debut at Blue Sage and Silver Creek. The designs are from our Modern American Classics Collection. We’ve put our spin on several design elements from iconic American architecture. We’ve updated ranch-style and farmhouse designs, given craftsman and prairie-style architecture an urban interpretation, and created contemporary styles with distinctive roof lines and huge windows. The streetscape will feature a hint of yesteryear, with a modern twist.

What’s a Contemporary Cottage?

Contemporary Cottage is our name for smaller yet stylish single-family homes from our Modern American Classics Collection. These two-story, two-bed, two-bath homes are reminiscent of another era—but with a contemporary touch. Well-organized interiors maximize the use of space. Lots of windows flood the home in natural light. There’s an upstairs study or third bedroom, plus outdoor living up and down and a single-car garage. The contemporary cottages are on-deck for Silver Creek in Lafayette, with construction starting Fall 2018.

Does Markel Homes have single-family homes in Longmont?

We’re building single-family homes in Prospect New Town—the last homes to be built in this one-of-a-kind community, located off Hwy 287 in south Longmont. We’re on-track to start construction on single-family homes at West Grange in late summer 2018. West Grange is the new Markel Homes community located at the junction of Nelson Road and 75th Street, just 15 minutes northeast of Boulder.

When will the first West Grange properties from Markel Homes be completed?

Infrastructure work at West Grange will be finished in late summer 2018, with home construction to follow. The first homes will be completed in early to mid 2019. Go here to get on the West Grange interest list. You can also visit the West Grange website.
